We found a new (to us!) comic series from Dark Horse, one that claims to be “Hellboy meets Redwall“. William of Newbury was created by Michael Avon Oeming, who previously brought us the well-known Mice Templar series. Here’s what Dark Horse says: “Loosely based on real events in 12th century England during what was known as ‘The Anarchy’. A time where the country was beset with plague, civil war, and demons. William of Newbury is a neurotic monk, fearful of the earthly world, but confident and unwavering in the face of true evil. He fights the dead to restore peace, but his brother is intent on stopping him, fearing for his soul. Newbury is dark, yet quaint, deadly yet cute. Follow him as he negotiates with thieves, evades his brother and the church, and battles the undead and evil spirits.” Issues 1 through 4 are now together in a trade paperback.

Movie review: ‘Dog Man’ (2025)
Dog Man (trailer) is an 89-minute 3D action-comedy animated film released by DreamWorks in 2025. It was written and directed by Peter Hastings, based on the Dog Man series of children’s graphic novels by Dav Pilkey, which are a spin-off from his Captain Underpants books. And because this film is up for a 2025 Ursa Major Award, this seemed like a good opportunity to watch and review it, while the voting period is still open!Dog Man is an anthro-dog cop, created in a hospital emergency room after an accident critically injures a human cop and his pet dog, saving their lives by fusing them together. Don’t think about it too much. He has no tail and communicates entirely by canine sounds. His arch-enemy is an anthro-cat criminal named Petey, who’s very fond of creating diabolical machines. The whole thing is happily silly, and remarkably, the trailer doesn’t spoil anything!
(Though it does lie. Dog Man can, in fact, play the piano quite well.)

WPAFW Future Plans
WPAFW staff are kicking off planning for 2026, and we wanted to share a very important announcement from Manick!
Since 2013 when I started out in Registration to 2018 when I was honored to succeed Blithe as Chair(cat), WPAFW has seen impressive growth. Through all difficulties we’ve encountered, we’ve shown enormous strength. Whether bringing the community together or providing significant support for our local charities, our event has become a major foundation of our local community. The event, started in Swift’s own backyard, continues to evolve and change and grow. The future is one of enormous possibility. I could not be prouder of the work done by the entire staff of WPAFW. I could not be prouder to be entrusted with such a leadership role and to have truly helped usher that growth in.
After many years as Chair, I am passing the proverbial torch, as Swift originally put it, to Rel! From a Chaircat to a Chairdog, we revel in housepet leadership!
Please join me in welcoming Rel as the new chair of WPAFW! Let’s welcome her as warmly as we welcome newcomers and old friends alike. =D
Thank you, truly, for being an amazing community, for giving us the honor and pride of serving this community, and, on a more personal note, for giving me your trust and support throughout my years as Chaircat.
