Furpocalypse’s Rooms Go In A Snap

Furpocalyse’s room blocks sold out faster than ever this year, leaving many frustrated. The main hotel, pictured in 2024 before any renovations which are currently ongoing. (Eberra Wolf/Flayrah)

Furpocalypse’s room blocks for both the main hotel and the overflow hotel sold out within minutes on Saturday, frustrating many furs who plan to attend, though a problem not wholly unique to the convention. The main hotel, where the convention will hold its events, is again the DoubleTree by Hilton Stamford. Its room block sold out in under five minutes, according to the convention. The overflow hotel, the Hyatt Regency Greenwich, sold out faster, at three minutes. This is the quickest hotel rooms had been booked to date, according to the convention.

  • Mephit Fur Meet 2026 Cancelled

I really hate reporting this, it was awful when their hotel suddenly cancelled with literally 3 weeks to the convention. I really give it to all the hard work that staff to find a location.

Taken directly from their site https://www.mephitfurmeet.org/

    Dear MFM Family,

We have some sad news to share with you. We need to postpone Mephit Fur Meet this year.

Since Thursday we’ve done the following things:

Made 132 phone calls to different venues
Actually had conversations with 73 different hotels across Tennessee and Mississippi
Had three hotels go from “yes we can host you” to “oh wait, no we can’t” after we told them we wanted to move forward
We’ve done everything we can do. Labor Day weekend is a very busy weekend in the Memphis area, and it shows. Every hotel around is full.

The poll last night was very close, with a tight mix between “postpone until 2027” and “try to have a mini Memphit.” (A virtual event was not that popular.) Since it was close we made even more phone calls this morning to try to find a place in cities further away, but even those came up empty.

We’ll have details coming up in a few days about how we’re going to handle memberships. We need to decide what to do with our systems to make that possible. (We’ll quickly need to add something new.)

We are going to extend the deadline for requesting a refund to this weekend if you would rather have a refund than rolling over to MFM 2027. We want to be transparent with our family that most of our funds have been tied up in prep for 2026, so we’d much prefer it if folks would roll over to 2027, but we’ll work with you.

We know this is going to have a financial impact on some of our attendees, and we’re really sorry. This is very frustrating for us, too. (Some of our directors and staffers are dealing with flights that aren’t refundable, too.) We’re really unhappy that we’ve had to make this decision, none of us wanted this.

We hope to see you back in 2027 for our big furry family reunion.

    With exhaustion of everything,
Alex, Blue, Bunny, Goliath, and Tyger

  • The Shopworn but Gritty Superheroes of “Lanterns…”

The Shopworn but Gritty Superheroes of “Lanterns…”

I’ve viewed the Pilot/First Episode of Lanterns, and liked it, although I didn’t really know what to expect beforehand. What fans did know is that we didn’t want to see a reiteration of the Ryan Reynolds 2011 Green Lantern movie, which failed to launch a franchise. Reynolds himself frequently frequently mocked his own role in the movie, which went on to do better in streaming. In all fairness, the film did capture the charming but cocky attitude of Earth’s first Green Lantern, Hal Jordan…

Wisely, the new series has dispensed or played down some of the traditions of The Green Lanterns, such as wearing the iconic suit and little mask everywhere. Such things don’t always translate well from comics to the screen, unless you’re Batman. In the first episode, we only see Hal Jordan wearing the suit for his first interview in 1996. In the present day, Hal Jordan (played by Kyle Chandler) and his trainee John Stuart (Aaron Pierre) usually wear their everyday grubby clothing. When asked by a restaurant server why no costume, Jordan responds that they’re like ties, which are initially worn to be respected and taken seriously. When you get older and wiser, explains Jordan, you know that ties are a “pain in the a**.” The Lantern suit is now worn only for “special occasions.” These are very relaxed, earthy-superheroes, complete with potty mouths…

The series does retain certain iconic totems of Lantern lore, however, such as the awesomeness of the Lantern rings, which are sentient and retain a kind of interactive likeness of their wearer in case something happens to that agent. Hal Jordan hardly operates incognito, since everyone on Earth knows who and what he is. Indeed, Jordan goes to a taco stand in Nebraska, where he patiently signs autographs for the locals. Jordan employs kind of a “sink or swim” training method with his trainee, bailing out of a speeding car headed down a cliff, and leaving John Stuart with only his ring to determine how to escape annihilation…

Described as “cosmic cops” who each have charge of a chunk of the galaxy (Earth is Sector 2814), our Green Lantern and his trainee are hot on the trail of aliens who are killing people. It seems that fully 14 alien species have the technology to pass as human, so this is not an easy task. Fortunately, Jordan has good if unconventional detective skills, and can use his Green Lantern abilities to contain the explosions the aliens generate when discovered…

Lanterns employs multiple non-linear timelines, specifically 1996, 2016, and 2026. Most of the series takes place in 2016, and I will not give a “spoiler” for a shocking event at the end of Episode 1. Although not what one would have expected, this superhero detective drama surprisingly works!

(Lanterns airs stateside Sunday night at 9:00 PM on the HBO television network and streams simultaneously on HBO Max…)
