The Review Part VI: The Editors Should Probably Strike Back

“Zootopia is definitely better than one of the most despised movies of the last decade!

Since we only had five reviews of the first Zootopia movie, you think not much else could be said about it, but, actually, it’s been almost a decade, and Disney movies collect bad faith readings like Flayrah collects Zootopia reviews, and I’d like to address a few of those.

First, starting small, there’s the “what do the predators eat?” thing which for some reason you still see bandied about like that’s a clever observation, despite the movie’s climax hinging the main predator character carrying a snack with him. Turns out, they eat food. Moving on, people like to complain about “copaganda”, but, honestly, even if you accept all cops are bad, they have jobs that put them in dramatic situations regularly, so people are going to tell stories about them. That, and I’ve recently seen complaints that the Godfather parody glorifies criminals, so tie goes to the movie. The big one is the assertion that the main metaphor equates specific races (usually African American or black) with predatory species, when the metaphor is about minorities in general, and the movie does not specifically code most characters racially (though you could possibly argue the lead characters are pretty white-coded). An ironically bad faith defense here is that, when Disney racially codes an animal character, it’s very noticeable, though they’ve mostly cut that out (mostly). Which brings me to the final complaint against Zootopia, which is that it is a Disney movie, and to that, all I can say is, well, nobody’s perfect.

Zootopia 2 is the sequel to Zootopia, which makes sense. (The movies are also known as Zootropolis in certain regions, which makes less sense.)

  • My 12th MFF

    My 12th MFF

I know it’s hard to believe but I have been going to MFF since 2013.

Back when Reg was in the same location a Headless Lounge now sits. I guess I have seen it all. From the expansion into the Convention center.

I know it’s hard to believe now but when it all started what is now panel rooms. Was the Dealers Den/ Artist Alley. To what it has become now.

This Thursday I get my badge, not next week, or next month. This very Thursday. And I am going to a couple of panels that evening.

Oh sure except for the Dealer’s Den, Artist Marketplace and the Art Show locations. It’s pretty much as I expected. I have no doubt that the Poke Bowl place will be in it’s usual place Really I am not expecting much than to have a good time and spend way more money than I should.

Will get some art commissioned I have this idea floating around, and if I can find an artist to do it. Rework my business card design.

It might sound like I am going to be bored. But I rarely am at MFF. There is so many unexpected things that always happens. I Hope to get my friend a replacement beanie. How that is going to go better wait to after the convention.

Oh sure I wish I got to do my Furry Reporter panel. But maybe that was a good thing in disguise. As strange as this sounds a few have advised me to postpone submitting it until 47 is gone. If you think about it, I am sure it makes sense.

Like usual I will be reporting via my phone. Which kinda limits where I can post to mainly here, Tumblr and Bluesky. Reasons behind this is sound, including the hotel has public wifi. That and the bitterly cold weather, they are saying we could see on Thursday. 19 for a high… geez.

When your hotel is more than a mile from the convention, it will be interesting.

I hope you check out my coverage, will will try my best to cover as much as I can.

Down from the North and Up to the Sky

Here’s a new animated film we’ve been hearing about for a while, but now we finally have a release date (and a new trailer) for Charlie the Wonderdog from Icon Creative Studios in Canada. “This heartfelt animated film follows Charlie the Wonderdog (voiced by Owen Wilson), a beloved family dog; after discovering his superpowers, he sets out to fulfill his destiny and protect the people he loves  — only to learn that real heroism comes from courage, kindness, and believing in yourself.” Look for it in theaters on January 16th of next year.
